Solid fuel and wood burning appliances

Whilst we can appreciate that solid fuel or wood burning appliances may seem an attractive proposition, i.e. free heat, we can not allow these to be installed.

We are aware that there are approximately 27 of our properties that have existing solid fuel heating systems. We will not force these customers to convert to gas but will convert the systems at the earliest opportunity.

Salford is located in an official smoke controlled area
The only solid fuel appliances allowed to be installed in a smoke controlled area must be on a list of exempted appliances as detailed by the Environmental agency/DEFRA.

Only fuel officially approved for use on the specific exempted appliance installed is allowed.

If you burn the wrong type of fuel, you and your neighbours could be at risk from chimney fires.

If you burn non approved type of fuel, you will be in breach of the building regulations and the Clean Air act.

If you fit an appliance without our permission and do not inform us about it, City West will not be able to maintain it to a safe and efficient standard as required under our duty of care, section 3 Health and Safety at work act 1974.
