Fire safety in your home

A A A

City West are working in partnership with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMRFS) to ensure that every City West home has a working smoke alarm. Together we’re committed to reducing fire deaths and giving advice on preventing fire.

GMRFS offer free Home Fire Safety Checks and fit free smoke alarms. They are also reminding residents of vital tips to prevent fires in the home.

Kitchen fires kill or injure nearly 20 people every day. These fires can be prevented by following these simple steps:

  • Keep electrical leads, tea towels and cloths away from the cooker.
  • Keep the oven, hob and grill clean. A build-up of fat and grease can easily catch fire.
  • Don’t put anything metallic inside the microwave.
  • Take care if you are wearing loose clothing, it can easily catch fire.
  • Don’t leave pans unattended.
  • Don’t use matches or lighters to light gas cookers.
  • Turn saucepan handles so they don’t stick out from the hob.

For more information, visit the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service website or see our Fire Safety Leaflet which provides advice about how to reduce the risk of fire in your home and what to do should a fire occur either in the home or in communal areas of blocks of flats and sheltered schemes.

To book your free home safety check, call our Service Centre on 0800 555 815 or ask at your local area office.
