Benefits entitlement and advice

If managing your finances is becoming more and more difficult you may find you are entitled to some government benefits. To check you are receiving everything you and your family are entitled to go to the Directgov Benefits Adviser Service.

Here you’ll find online calculators, information about Tax Credits, managing debt, pensions and self assessment tax returns. There are step by step guides to help you through it and make your money work harder for you.

If you would like to see if you could be entitled to housing and council tax benefits then go to the Turn2Us Benefits Search and enter your details.

It is very important that you tell Salford City Council if your circumstances change as you could receive too much or too little benefit. You must inform the Housing Benefit Department if:

  • any of your children leave school or leave home
  • anyone moves into or out of your home
  • your income, or the income of anyone living with you, changes
  • your capital or savings change
  • your rent changes
  • you move address
  • you or your partner or civil partner are going to be away from home for more than a month
Please note this is not a full list to find out more information please follow www.salford.gov.uk/benefits Or contact 0161 909 6504

It is always your responsibility to report changes in circumstances. Failure to do so could result in a fraud prosecution, a benefit overpayment or losing your benefit.

The Housing Benefit Department can be contacted on 0161 909 6504.

Direct Payments

Direct payments are for people who have been assessed as needing help from social services, and who would like to arrange and pay for their own care and support services instead of receiving them directly from City West or Salford City Council. You can find out more about direct payments and the possibilities they offer on the Suggest in Salford website.
