Fill in our Energy Awareness Survey so we can tailor our information and services to your needs.

We'll be working hard to get new heating systems in as many homes as possible, but there are lots of great tips for making your home more energy efficient in the meantime. There are many reasons to save energy:

  • You can save over £300 on energy bills over a year.
  • Help reduce Co2 emissions
  • Improve Quality of life
  • Spend your money on something else

How do I know if my home is energy efficient?

The Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is the ratings scale of 0 to 100 which measures energy efficiency. The higher rating the more energy efficient your home. These are calculated on factors such as age, property layout, construction, heating, lighting, and insulation.
If you started your tenancy after October 2008 you will have received an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) which indicates the SAP rating for your home.
The EPC shows two things about the house:

    • The energy-efficiency rating
    • The environmental impact rating Co2 emissions due to the efficiency of your home.

If your tenancy began prior to October 2008 we have other information from which we can calculate the SAP rating.

Is there anything I can do to save energy?

Yes, the actual energy you will use in running a property will depend on factors such as how long you use the heating and whether lights and appliances are left on.

  • Use low energy light bulbs.
  • Check that your heating system thermostat is not set too high (in a home, 21°C in the living room is suggested) and use the timer to ensure you only heat the building when necessary.
  • Turn off lights when not needed and do not leave appliances on standby. Remember not to leave chargers (e.g. for mobile phones) turned on when you are not using them.
  • Close your curtains at night to reduce the heat escaping through the windows and if sunny leave the curtains open in the day.
  • If you're not filling up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher, use the half-load or economy programme.

Staying Warm

Saving energy is important, but so is staying warm. Make sure you stay warm, especially in winter, there are many simple ways you can keep warm and still save money. Are you prepared for winter?

Here are a few easy-to-follow, no cost tips:

  • Do not put heaters under windows or cover them with curtains, as this wastes heat and may be unsafe
  • Avoid opening doors and windows to cool a room that is too hot. Turn the heating down instead
  • Set the timer on your central heating to come on half hour before you wake up and half hour before you get home
  • Set radiators to economy settings
