There are two ways to buy your home. One is by the Preserved Right To Buy and the other, the Right To Acquire.
This applies to you if you were already a council tenant who transferred to City West on 6th October 2008. You will normally have a Right To Buy your home if you were a secure tenant of another local authority at that time too.
The Preserved Right to Buy also applies if you move to another property owned by City West but not if you move to a property owned by a different landlord.
Remember you must have been a tenant living in the property on the transfer date to be eligible.
Through the Preserved Right to Buy you will get a discount on the market value of your home. The longer you have been a qualifying tenant, the greater the discount.
The Right To Acquire works in much the same way, but may be available for people who began their tenancy after 6th October 2008.
With the Right to Aquire the discount is fixed but not as generous as the Right to Buy.
In both cases the discount is repayable if the property is sold within five years of purchase or in certain other circumstances.
Some types of properties like sheltered housing for the elderly or specially adapted homes are excluded from the Right to Buy or Right to Acquire.
We have information leaflets and documents designed to help you through your move.
